I discovered the Airways Division of the Lighthouse Bureau quite by accident, while I was indexing
Lighthouse Service
Bulletins for research purposes. The idea that the Lighthouse Bureau had supervised civil aviation in its very early
days astounded me, and so I looked for further records of that 1926-1932 period. I used what I found to write a two-part
article published in 2008 in
The Keepers' Log, the quarterly journal of the
U.S. Lighthouse Society. Having transcribed all the documentation that I collected from the National Archives and from other sources,
I want to share it with interested readers. It's available below as a PDF file.
